Paving the Way through Education

The Okala Foundation was born out of the desire to contribute to a better world for our children, brothers, and sisters. They say every little bit helps and this Foundation is our little bit.

Chairman's message

In pursuit of the dream ...

One year ends, another begins: It is an understatement to say that 2021 will have been a particularly difficult year for all of us, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. COVID negatively impacted many across the globe,  particularly in Africa where unemployment became more rampant. As a result, many children were unable to attend school. Another impact of COVID has been the disruption of the school year,   where many children ended up having a school year of 16 months or more as opposed to the usual 9 months. I firmly believe education of our youth, especially that of young girls is primordial. To those, I would like to express here my admiration.

The development of Africa will inevitably pass through education, in addition to other parameters including in particular Good Governance. If we want to avoid early or forced marriages, unwanted or early pregnancies, sexual and gender-based violence, if we want to fight sustainably against genital mutilation and the feminization of poverty or even certain diseases , I believe that education is the key.

Education is a powerful lever for change. It improves health and livelihoods, contributes to social stability, and stimulates long-term economic growth. Education builds self-confidence, it can change the world, it can change interpersonal relationships. Education is the mine of opportunity in life. Higher education prepares children for a wider range of jobs and professions, thereby empowering them to change the cycle of poverty in their families and communities. As is often said, “As more children are educated, the world becomes a brighter place.”

The OKALA Foundation – For Education has modestly made this its credo: to help Africans go to university. We started our activities in February with 3 scholarship recipients. For the 2021-2022 school year, we did even better by awarding 10 more scholarships, 6 of which were given to young girls. This is my opportunity to once again thank our generous donors who have supported us thus far by believing in what we are aiming to accomplish.

You too can be part of our journey by supporting us to help change the life of a young child, a family or community. You can help these young people who face so many daily hurdles to go to school with the hope of becoming our future doctors, sociologists, engineers, architects, journalists, teachers, nurses…etc. As the French writer Sylvain Tesson says, “to live is to make a memory of your dream“.

To all of you, I wish you a Happy New Year 2022

If you didn’t know, Here’s a bit about us.

The Okala Foundation was born out of the desire to contribute to a better world for our children, brothers, and sisters. We believe that access to a good education is  a human rights issue, and  every child should be given the equal opportunity to attend school. Unfortunately, many are left behind due to a lack of finances and we want to change that. Through this foundation, we have an opportunity to give back to our roots and make a positive and lasting impact in our community.

We come from diverse backgrounds – yet are united by our passion for education, our shared experiences of being immigrants, of being of color and wanting to do our part to serve as models for others.
